Himalayan Balsam is a very invasive plant species that creates untold damage to UK Rivers and in our case the River Wear beats.
It is relatively easy to remove but needs massive effort for any one individual with the amount we have got.
If every angler took 10 minutes each visit removing a patch by hand we could make good inroads to getting rid of it. Now is a good time to try and remove as much Himalayan Balsam as we can before the seeds start to develop.
I have included a link to a video made by a lady from the North Wales River Trust that shows you how to do it. Gloves are recommended as the only plant that seems to thrive around the Balsam are Nettles!

Update: The wasp's nest in the completed catch returns box has now been removed so please use the catch returns box as normal. Thank you.
Wasps are nesting in the catch return box at Thornton Steward so please take care around this area. We hope to deal with this problem in the next few days.
In the meantime please do not post completed catch returns in the returns box. Rather put completed returns in the bag inside the green box that houses the blank returns.
Thank you.

The recent floods have causes some damage on the river but one any member fishing the Frankland beat on the Wear needs to be aware of is the foot bridge over the beck just downstream of the lower carpark.
As can be seen the flood has caused some bank erosion and one of the clamps holding the bridge has slipped. The bridge still seems secure if you stick to the edge but it will be different when wet.
We are working on a plan to rectify this but in the meantime extreme care is needed should you choose to cross this bridge.

Our bailiffs are reporting that tree felling and stripping is in progress with machinery in operation in and about the field where we access the beat. Please be aware, park with care and ensure that heavy plant has plenty of space to access the field. Thank you.
